Engineers building Zimbabwe's distributed grid

Penhalonga Energy was created to exploit the numerous smaller hydro sites overlooked by other developers — and to build them with a single, capable team that carries every discipline in-house.

Our story

From a pilot on the Nyamukombe to a regional fleet

Goldsaif (Pvt) Ltd t/a Penhalonga Energy is a registered Zimbabwean company and a specialist developer of grid-connected micro-hydro stations, following a strict build-own-operate approach.

After consulting on 25 MW of mini-hydro in the Honde Valley, our founders set up Penhalonga Energy to develop the smaller, harder sites others ignored. The first two stations — Claremont and Odzi — were built using the group's own funds.

Today we're accelerating construction of larger projects across Nyanga and Chipinge, with the proven team, licences and agreements to do it.

Sister company

Backed by Solar Energy Projects

Solar Energy Projects (SEP) is one of Zimbabwe's leading suppliers of commercial and industrial PV systems. Its success funded Penhalonga Energy's first two stations, and the two companies share engineering talent, a construction core, and a permanent team of artisans and up to 70 community contract workers per project.

A permanent core of artisans — led by a senior foreman/surveyor directing builders, stone masons, carpenters, welders and heavy-equipment operators — drawn from the communities where we build.

Our journey

A decade of building renewable power

  1. 2010

    Solar Energy Projects founded

Oloff and Sebastian Smyth start SEP, which grows into one of Zimbabwe's leading commercial solar suppliers.

  2. 2017

    Claremont pilot commissioned

Our first run-of-river station proves the build-own-operate model and begins feeding the grid.

  3. 2024

    Odzi Power Station live

A 600 kW station, funded from our own resources, demonstrates the model at greater scale.

  4. 2025

    Megawatt scale

Odzani (1 MW) commissions and Claremont's upgrade and Rusitu come into construction.

  5. 2026+

    Accelerating the pipeline

Rusitu 2 (4 MW) anchors a deepening pipeline of larger run-of-river and solar projects.
